Sheila P. Spencer, laywoman from Los Angeles, Calif., has been called to the position of program director and merger staff in the Office of Disciples Women. According to Adonna Bowman, executive director of the Office of Disciples Women, Spencer will begin her new position April 1, stepping in to the position being vacated by Lonnie Graves January 31.
Included in the duties of her new position will be providing direct staff support to the Executive Committee of the National Convocation. In that role, Sheila will provide oversight in the planning and implementation of women’s events and ministry for African-American churches and women's groups; provide leadership training through workshops and retreats; and, provide development of resources and strategies which promote participation of ethnic women in local congregations and the wider church.
Sheila will also facilitate, administer, and oversee activities in support of the Women's Resource Consulting committee, provide staff support to a working group for the 2010 Quadrennial Assembly, and lead the Leader Apprentice Program for Disciples Women.
Spencer is a graduate of the University of Southern California and received her graduate degree from California State Dominguez Hills. She is an author, writer, educator, speaker, and poet with works including her book of poetry entitled Unto Whom Much is Given and numerous inspirational articles for magazines and educational curriculum.
Included among Spencer’s many credentials are her participation as a member of the first Enabler Ministry for Women (now called Leader Apprentice Program); her participation in the Woman-to-Woman Worldwide experience to Cuba in 1998; her service on the executive committee of the National Convocation; and her service as chair of the Disciples Home Missions Board of Directors.
Spencer enjoys writing, traveling, and being blessed to be a blessing to others and looks forward to her move to Indianapolis and the opportunity to serve in this new position.
